Lip Praising, Vain Worship
Matthew 15:8 KJV This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
One of the means through which a man’s thought is revealed is the mouth. That’s why Jesus said, “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh. Luke 6:45 KJV”. But the Bible passage, Matt. 15:8 reveals that praises could actually be sung without the heart being aligned to it.
There is a popular African story of how the tortoise lip praised the elephant to his slaughter. Most times we think we can deceive God and we come to Him with vain worship expecting to be blessed after our sport display.
Some years back after my secondary school. I would spend time praying and worshipping God but with different intentions. I would praise Him because I needed to gain admission. I wanted to be the richest in my family and to be above everybody. I wanted almost everything in the world so I won’t be inferior to others. If I actually got all my requests, I would be bitter, vengeful, rude and would eventually lose my salvation because I planned to forsake God after getting what I want.
You might actually think, you can act up. That you can pose to be what you aren’t before God. You think a hypocrite could be blessed? No. An Actor is better to hypocrite because he picks up a role and acts as what he’s not but is paid and would have passed a message to his viewers. A hypocrite would never be blessed or be a blessing to others.
For every true worship is a reward; the presence of God. And when He is present, what can’t happen? Acts 16:25-26. What is sweeter than the presence of the Almighty God?
You need to check yourself. Do a self evaluation. Check the motive you have for serving God.
God doesn’t want to be taken for a steward. What He needs are faithful stewards to bear His name and fame.
Let us pray: Father, search my intent and purge me of selfishness.
