Too Close to Sodom?
Read: I John 2:15-17 (ERV)
15 Don’t love this evil world or the things in it. If you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. 16 This is all there is in the world: wanting to please our sinful selves, wanting the sinful things we see, and being too proud of what we have. But none of these comes from the Father. They come from the world. 17 The world is passing away, and all the things that people want in the world are passing away. But whoever does what God wants will live forever.
Let’s have a look at the story of Lot in Genesis 13:10-13, it is noticeable that Lot, when asked by Abraham to pick his place to settle in, he picked the part that looked more likely to blossom, the part close to a river, the part that was appealing to the eye. The part close to Sodom.
Sodom was notorious at the time, for various sinful practices. Lot didn’t mind. As long as that land blossomed. We all know how that ended. Lot lost everything when Sodom and Gomorrah were burnt.
We live in a world where not all that glitters is definitely gold. That is the reality. Many all desire to use the latest gadgets, ride the latest cars, follow up with all the latest trends without really knowing if it is right for them or not. The text above clearly states that any person that exhibits love of the world and the things that are in it, then the Love of the Father is not in him.
We are admonished not to love the world because when you do, it is easy to be caught up in the seemingly exhilarating wiles in it, and forget what we are meant to be – an extension of God on Earth.
We are in this world for a purpose. And we should break all banks to ensure it’s fulfilment. We are also meant to enjoy every second we spend on this Earth, in Christ, because ardently following Christ magnets everything you need for a fulfilling and exciting life. And all these without soiling your hands in evil, or being caught in the web of the love of the world. This world is destined for doom. We, however, are destined for Glory, so we might as well take as many people as we can with us, without getting caught in the mix. Remain blessed.
Prayer Point: Father, remove from my heart every love for the world.
